The Art Institute of Chicago
By Jay A. Clarke
This exhibition was brilliantly curated by Jay A. Clarke, who compared Munch’s work with that of his European contemporaries and of lesser-known Scandinavian artists who influenced and inspired him. The comparative groupings drive the design and pacing of the catalogue. The structure, for the most part, is text on the left page with the works of art considered on the right. The figure numbers on the page edges, the captions in a constant position, and the figure callouts in bold within the text allow the reader to reference back and forth among the images, captions and discussions. The artists’ bios include thumbnail images and cross references to the corresponding texts and comparative groupings.
The catalogue is a hand-held gallery, as beautifully designed as it is written.
