Edited by Peter Nisbet

This collection contains art from the early fifteenth century through the late twentieth century with a concentration on German expressionist and Bauhaus periods. The representative images, selected by Peter Nisbet, are brilliantly juxtaposed on spreads allowing historical, formal and imaginative comparisons. The curator wanted the book to be elegant, contemporary and “not the edgiest of the edgy.” Most important was the placement, size, scale, rhythm and space around the pairings so that each work has presence and distinction.
